SMI Welcomes New Technical Adviser

The Spring Manufacturers Institute (SMI) has announced the addition of Simon Fleury as the association’s new technical adviser.

Fleury, a licensed mechanical engineer with a degree from Université Laval in Québec, spent the bulk of his career as a partner at a major Canadian spring manufacturer active in the automotive, aerospace and recreational vehicles business.

“Through his involvement in engineering and quality assurance, Simon has witnessed the evolution of our industry over the past 30 years,” said SMI president Gene Huber Jr. of Winamac Coil Spring. “His knowledge in materials, spring design and failure analysis will be a great asset in assisting SMI members in problem-solving.”

Huber noted that Fleury also has experience in the various spring industry processes, including coiling, grinding, heat treatment, shot-peening and industrial coating processes. During his career, Fleury oversaw operations in manufacturing facilities in Canada, Mexico and China. He has extensive experience in customer and supplier relation management.

After retiring in 2021, Fleury is now a management and technical consultant. He is also a commercial pilot. He will work closely with SMI’s technical director, C. Richard “Rick” Gordon. Fleury will be available to assist members with spring design and technical issues. In addition, he will assist Gordon in helping teach spring design training courses and as a member of SMI’s technical committee.

Fleury can be reached at Sfleury1@telus.net or 418-241-6214. For more information about SMI, visit www.smihq.org.
