The Spring Manufacturers Institute
Technical Help Service

SMI's Technical Help Service assists companies with springmaking problems.

This service is provided by Luke Zubek, SMI Technical Director.

Ask the Expert

If you are an SMI member or a company whose primary business is making springs, you are eligible to use the Technical Help Service free of charge.

If springmaking is not your company's primary business, you may be charged a consulting fee to use this service.

Directions:

1. Click on "Ask A Question," below.

2. Type in your question regarding spring design, materials or springmaking processes. To receive an answer, be sure to include your name, company, complete address, phone, fax and e-mail.

3. Click "Send."

Once your question has been received, the SMI office will send an acknowledgement of your question. Luke Zubek, SMI technical director, will contact you with an answer within a few days.

Spring Manufacturers Institute Technical Director

Luke Zubek is the Technical Director of the Spring Manufacturers Institute.

Before joining SMI in 2004, he accumulated over 20 years of experience in the metals industry, including 10 years with Inland Steel (now Arcelor Mittal). His educational background includes a Master's of Materials and Metallurgical Engineering degree from the Illinois Institute of Technology and a BS in Metallurgical Engineering from the University of Illinois at Chicago.

He is a registered Professional Engineer in the state of Illinois.
Zubek has worked for a several major steel companies and has been instrumental in making significant advances in quality as a cross-functional Team Leader. Some of the projects included optimizing the performance of spring steels used for automotive suspension and reducing the segregation and inclusion content in automotive axle grades. He also has extensive experience with heat treating, shot peening, continuous casting and steelmaking operations.
